MFRW Legislative Update 2-11-24

Last Thursday, the Senate of Maryland held a hearing on the End of Life Options Act (SB 0443).  This coming Friday, February 16th at 1 p.m., the House Judiciary Committee and Health and Government Operations Committees will hold a joint hearing on the House version (HB 0403).  Please take action to stop this dangerous legislation.  The MFRW will submit the same written testimony to the House committees opposing the End of Life Options Act as we submitted to the Senate (see attached). Written testimony must be submitted on Wednesday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.  Please, if you can, send written testimony or send e-mails to each of the Committee members opposing HB 0403 this week. (Committee lists attached.)

News reports said that there were 100 witnesses for the Senate hearing. Twenty-six spoke in favor of the bill and 74 were opposed.  Remember, the last time this issue was before the Maryland General Assembly it failed by one vote. The membership of the Senate and House have changed substantially since 2019.  These new members have not heard or voted on this issue before.  Your message to them is very important.  Please contact the members of these committees.

The four Voter integrity bills sponsored by Delegate Long have been rescheduled to be heard this Tuesday before the Ways and Means Committee. They deserve our support.

There are numerous bills dealing with juveniles, crimes and accountability. Please check them out.  Some of these bills have bi-partisan support.  Very encouraging.

Good News!  Thanks to President Sharon, the MFRW Weekly Legislative Update is available on-line at the MFRW website:  http://mfrw.org.  At the site go to the "Legislative" menu tab.  It will be updated regularly.
