Changing how we vote for Calvert County Commissioners

Delegate Brain Crosby(D) in St Mary's has introduced HB0447 to the Maryland General Assembly to change the election process of most of the county commissioners in St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Garrett Counties.

Commissioners in these counties are elected by a general at-large vote to represent the entirety of the county, not separate districts.

This bill's virtue signals pretexts of democracy and social justice to disguise what is actually partisan politics. Based on this, the sponsor anticipates a political advantage at the expense of the voting public.

Right now, voters in these three counties have a full say in elections of county commissioners, with the ability to vote for all of them. If this legislation passes, the voters will only be able to vote for two of the five county commissioners. However, the remaining three will still have influence over the entire county in terms of taxation, zoning, regulations, etc.

The proposed change to by-district elections will be consequential to county governance. This change should be decided by the VOTERS of these three Counties, not in Annapolis. This is simply voter suppression and disenfranchisement.
